He can indeed hold a job, but how do I put this? Hythlodaeus does what he wants, and only what he wants. He was the Chief of the Bureau of the Architect back in Amaurot, which is a position that only those of the Convocation tower over. As such, this position afforded him a lot of freedom as well as control over all Creation magic proceedings. Naught was approved for replication without his seal of approval.
Which is my way of saying, Team Rocket will be a horrible fit for him, and Steven most assuredly has his work cut out for him if he thinks at all he will be successful. Honestly, I would wager Hythlodaeus is stringing him along for information I otherwise withheld.
That isn't the total opposite of what I advised him to do with himself, I guess. Steven, I mean. I haven't advised Hythlodaeus on jack shit. That he listened to, anyway.

So much so that it ultimately ended up becoming true, but in the process she cheated herself out of a chance at a happy ending.
